Lisa's week: Don’t forget to take your handy to the public viewing!
With all this talk of football – and yes, I’ve had to swallow a few jokes about the English team over the last few weeks! – I’ve been thinking about some of the English expressions that you find in everyday German but which we don’t actually say in Britain!
My title contains two, in fact: “handy” and “public viewing”. I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you that the Brits (or the Americans for that matter) don’t talk about either of these. Rather we use the expressions “mobile (phone)” – cell phone in the US – and “outdoor screening”. Now, of course, we mostly understand what you want to say when you use one of these Deutschlich words or expressions, but it can make us smile all the same.
What about some other typical Deutchlish phrases that I hear often?
|You say: fitness studio
||We say: the gym
|You say: gymnastik
||We say: exercise/s
|You say: do sport
||We say: do keep-fit / do exercise
|You say: home office
||We say: work from home (UK) / telecommuting (US)
|You say: beamer
||We say: projector
|You say: navi
||We say: satnav
|You say: I’ll have my steak English
||We say: I’ll have my steak rare
|You say: mobbing
||We say: bullying
I’m sure there are a whole load more so expect to see this topic come up again once I’ve collected some more.
What is Lisa's week?
"We’ve (hopefully) been entertaining you so far with the meaning and background of a weekly English idiom and now we’ve decided to expand that a little to give me the chance to share some details that come my way in my daily life as a Business English teacher. I hope to find weekly tidbits of information and experience to tell you about such as British traditions that I (or we) celebrate, or typical mistakes made when speaking English, or even some of the funny things I come across in my daily life. We hope that you’ll enjoy the insight into the life of a Brit in Germany!"
