Lisa's week: Just another few minutes!

Morgenmuffel

So the burning question in my brain this morning, as I hit my phone yet again this morning, is…. Are you a night owl or an early bird?

I’m most definitely the former and if you are wondering why on earth I was hitting my phone this morning, I can confirm that I am a habitual “snoozer”!

Do you do that? Set a morning alarm on your phone for a bit earlier than you really need to get up and then proceed to hit the snooze button over and over and over again until you are almost too late and then have to rush? Are we the same? Or are you one of those super organised, self-disciplined types who go to bed early at night in order to have a very early, wide-awake start in the morning. Usually accompanied by a single ring of the alarm before you bounce out of bed, refreshed and happy to start the day?

As well as the more familiar description of “an early bird”, we can also use the description “wide-eyed and bushy tailed” (meaning that you are happy and eager to start the day). I think I’m the total opposite of this - more like sleepy-eyed and grumpy! I was a bit disappointed to find that the German word “Morgenmuffel” has no suitable English equivalent. “Not a morning person” seems to be the most usual translation but for me, it misses the grumpy, grouchy side of my character in the first 45 minutes or so of my actually getting up! However, I have to say that when I’ve taken my first sip of the first cup of tea of the day, everything starts to get a little better and things improve from there so it’s not all bad!

So, which side of the fence are you on? Do you stay up late, pottering around, getting things done until the early hours, being that “night owl” and then fight to get your eyes open in the morning? Or are you someone who finds that the early hours of the day are your most productive time because you are a true “early bird”?

Of course, hitting the snooze so many times in the morning means that you have the risk of possibly oversleeping and I’m happy to report that this rarely happens. And I tend to catch up on all the sleep I’m missing during the week, at the weekend when I have a super long lie-in. I enjoy the feeling of not having to justify “just another 9 minutes”…. and can turn over and fall back to sleep again until my natural body clock pulls me out of my lazy slumber!

So, after several – or maybe I should say many – snoozes this morning, I can confirm to you that I am up and about and feeling much brighter and happier now that I’ve had that first cup of tea! A leopard never changes their spots, so they say, and I think I’ll always be a night owl and a Morgenmuffel. What about you? Are you in my club?

What is Lisa's week?

"We’ve (hopefully) been entertaining you so far with the meaning and background of a weekly English idiom and now we’ve decided to expand that a little to give me the chance to share some details that come my way in my daily life as a Business English teacher. I hope to find weekly tidbits of information and experience to tell you about such as British traditions that I (or we) celebrate, or typical mistakes made when speaking English, or even some of the funny things I come across in my daily life. We hope that you’ll enjoy the insight into the life of a Brit in Germany!"
